I usually rely on trying to average 2 to 3 simulated practice approaches under the hood per month to keep my proficiency sharp, because it's typically not easy to find good IMC days for practice living here in the dry plains of Dallas.
But this was an overcast morning, and the ceilings were around 1000'. So it was the perfect chance to practice flying in IMC as well, with 'not too hard' conditions that leave a good margin of safety should anything go wrong.
But, by the time we finally got out to the airport and were ready to depart, the clouds were already dissipating at KTKI. Then, with a delay caused by mechanical difficulties that required aborting the departure and putting it back on the ground, the clouds were disappearing even more. After resolving the issue, we were finally on our way, only to then be confronted by an emergency situation out at Mt Pleasant.
In the end, all the events added up to a very interesting flight, and some great BBQ too!
As a trailer on this video, I've included some of the great aircraft that you'll see if you go to the museum. The hands-on experience makes it an especially great place to take kids and spark their interest in airplanes.
